Option 1 – Classic Eiger Mittellegi Ridge Ascent from Eismeer

On day one, you meet your mountain guide in Grindelwald. After a short equipment check, you take the Jungfrau Railway to Eismeer Station. From there, a spectacular approach over boulder terrain, rock, and snow leads directly to the Mittellegi Hut at 3,355 meters. The hut is perched on the ridge and offers breathtaking views into the valley already at dinner.

On day two, the Eiger Mittellegi Ridge ascent begins before sunrise. The ridge starts directly behind the hut and leads over airy climbing sections of UIAA grade II to III, combined with steep snowfields. Always accompanied by stunning panoramic views, you reach the Eiger summit (3,967 m) after 4 to 6 hours. The descent follows the west face to the Eigergletscher or via the Eigerjoch to Jungfraujoch, from where you return by train to Grindelwald.

Option 2 – Eiger Traverse from Grindelwald via Ostegg (Integral)

The full Eiger Mittellegi Ridge traverse is the ultimate challenge. On day one, you ascend via a short via ferrata to the Ostegg Hut. From there, you continue over the lower Mittellegi Ridge to the Mittellegi Hut – this approach itself is a demanding alpine undertaking with spectacular sections.

Day two is dedicated to the full Mittellegi Ridge ascent to the summit, followed by the descent over the Eigerjoch to Jungfraujoch. This option is longer and more demanding but also more impressive – ideal for experienced alpinists with strong endurance.

Requirements

You need excellent fitness for at least 1,200 vertical meters ascent and descent, confident climbing skills on exposed terrain up to UIAA grade 3+, sure-footedness, a head for heights, and experience with crampons. Ideally, you have completed tours such as the Weissmies Traverse or Rimpfischhorn.
